Gunnison County Weed District, Gunnison, CO 81230 Client: Hinsdale County, Lake City, CO 81235 Project: Redistricting Map In 2001 Hinsdale County realigned its internal population boundary for the voting issues undertaken by county commissioners. A map was commissioned to display an equal population for each boundary. County population data was acquired form the 2000 United States Census Data. The boundary lines were drawn in three units for each of the commissioners. Each unit needed to represent an equal distribution of population and of demographics for the area in which each commissioner resided. Client: Gunnison County Emergency Services, Gunnison, CO 81230 Project: Wildfire Maps Gunnison County Emergency Services & Gunnison Basin Wildfire Council collected existing field data on subdivision lots of current owner's housing construction type, lot vegetation, lot proximity to other fire hazards, lot ground cover type, lot proximity to water sources, and vacant lot potential hazards and water sources. Each lot was given a color rating based on Colorado State Forest Service Wildfire Hazard Matrix. The County's field note maps and parcel digital data were used to digitize the wildfire ratings, to create legends, and to prepare print ready maps for the following county subdivisions: Crested Butte Highlands, Crystal Creek, Pristine Point, Meridian Lake, Meridian Lake Meadows, Quartz Creek, Whitepine, Madsen Lake Fork Cove, Rainbow Placer, Red Mountain Ranch, and Trappers Crossing. These maps are used as emergency services tools. The color matrix rating shapefiles were created to present, via the maps, each subdivision's lots potential wildfire hazard for vegetation, number and type of lot structures, and water source. Included in the work were access roads and natural and manmade water sources for emergency service needs. Attention to text accuracy, color variations, precise site placement, and readability were the focus on these maps. Sample Map » Client: United States Forest Service, Gunnison, CO 81230 Project: Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive (TES) Species Model The Gunnison Forest Rangeland Management Specialist requested digital data for Colorado Federal Forests' hydrology, geology, vegetation, and soil points. An extensive on-line and personal contact search resulted in collection of Colorado's current Federal Forests' data. This compilation of information and forest boundary shapefiles created a working base for the Threatened, Endangered and Sensitive (TES) vegetation species TES Model to be used for planning on Colorado's Federal Forest level. Various scenario maps were created for the Gunnison Forest, the Region, and the State. A specific plant could then be queried presenting the viewer with background on water, slope, and growth potential. TES species could then be planted and monitored during the field season by ground crews and field technicians. As additional base data is gathered during future field seasons, technicians would add this information to the model for continued query, investigation, and monitoring. Client: Bio Environ Inc, Gunnison, CO 81230 Project: Wetlands Mitigation Maps The Owner/Biologist requested a number of small maps be created to identify mitigation work on wetland sections of private, public, and commercial properties. In one approach or another the project maps involved adding descriptive bullets to locations on topographic maps, digitizing wetland delineation shapefiles, transferring waypoints to a database, converting to a shapefile, and again digitizing a polygon for identification and management purposes. Sample Map » Client: Town of Lake City, Colorado Project: Noxious Weeds Survey In the summer of 2004 bids were requested for noxious weed updates in the town of Lake City, CO. This map is the result of the GPS survey of Colorado Noxious Weeds by Gunnison Mapping. For the survey, species size and type were gathered and then transferred to street files with legend and species totals. Sample Map » |
